French Polynesian strike closes port, threatens power supply

4:13 pm on 21 March 2008

A strike in French Polynesia has closed the port of Papeete and a dispute at fuel supply companies now threatens the power supply in Tahiti.

Truck drivers have demanded that a minimum fuel supply be guaranteed by the state as some businesses have been closed for a week because of a lack of fuel.

They have lifted a partial road block west of Papeete after they were received by the government.

With the port closed, there is a possibility that a supply ship will move on as it has failed to dock.

International flights out of Tahiti are no longer allowed to load freight and the French authorities have warned of serious disruptions to air traffic from tomorrow.

The banking sector has also been hit by strikes.
