Samoa toddler spared court appearance

4:13 pm on 27 March 2008

A three-year old Samoan toddler who is the victim of an indecent act did not have to appear to give evidence as first scheduled by the police prosecution.

Instead testimony by a medical doctor who examined the child and a police investigator was enough to convict the 19-year-old man who was charged with one count of indecent assault.

The chief justice, Patu Falefatu Sapolu, sentenced him to two months in jail.

Our correspondent says the accused had been in custody since early January and may therefore be discharged.
