Doctor in East New Britain warns about impact of ash from Tavurvur

A doctor in Papua New Guinea's East New Britain province says people affected by ashfall from a volcanic eruption should stay indoors or wear face masks.

An increasing number of people in the province is complaining of chest pains and coughs caused by the continuous ashfall from Mt Tavurvur.

Jennifer Ho says she's seeing at least five patients a day with ashfall related health problems, but the numbers could be much higher because many people don't see a doctor when they feel these symptoms.

She says people should take extra measures when the wind blows the ash into their villages.

"I advise people to try to stay indoors when the ashfall is high and most people will try to stay indoors anyway because it's a very unpleasant experience when you walk outside and it seems just to be raining ash. If they do need to go out, usually just to use a towel just to put over their nose and mouth. Ideally they could wear a face mask."

Jennifer Ho says people should also avoid exercise.
