American Samoa Government gets tough on underage drinking

8:19 pm on 3 April 2008

The House of Representatives in American Samoa has passed a Senate bill which makes it a crime for anyone under 21 to possess or consume alcohol.

The bill also expands the list of public places where alcohol consumption is banned.

The Chairman of the Alcohol Beverage Control Board, Nuutai Sonny Thompson, says the board welcomed any mechanism to reduce underage drinking as there's been an alarming increase in young people being brought to the courts for alcohol related crimes.
