U.S. Senate passes federal legislation with provisions about CNMI

9:29 am on 12 April 2008

The U.S. Senate has passed federal legislation that includes provisions dealing with the Northern Mariana Islands.

One provision would extend federal immigration and labour laws to the CNMI, whose reputation has suffered over reports of sweatshop labour.

The bill also would grant the CNMI delegate in the US House of Representatives with limited voting powers.

Guam and American Samoa, among others, have a House delegate.
