Auckland lawyer to supervise Fiji elections

1:32 pm on 17 April 2008

An Auckland lawyer Dr Maurice Coughlan has been confirmed as Fiji's new Elections Supervisor.

Dr Coughlan has reportedly no experience in electoral systems, but the Constitutional Office Commission chairman, Rishi Ram, says he met its prerequisites.

He has a three year contract and is expected to begin work on May the 1st.

The appointment of an Elections Supervisor has been seen as a key development in ensuring Fiji can hold elections, as the interim regime has promised, by next March.
