Commonwealth to consider re-admitting Fiji later today

3:07 pm on 12 May 2008

Ministers from the Commonwealth group of countries are meeting in London tonight New Zealand time to consider whether to re-admit Fiji to the councils of the organisation.

The military coup led by Commodore Frank Bainimarama in December 2006 prompted the Commonwealth to suspend Fiji for a serious violation of the organisation's fundamental political values.

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group will consider whether Fiji has made enough progress towards the restoration of democracy and rule of law.

The Group says it's essential that elections be held by the deadline of March 2009, if not sooner.

It says all parties ought to be allowed to participate in those elections, and the interim government in Fiji should speed up its preparations for the polls.
