New Caledonia's Koniambo site blocked again

8:17 pm on 13 May 2008

The Koniambo nickel site in the north of New Caledonia has again been blocked by local truck drivers who are upset about not getting contracts.

In April, a first blockade had been organised over the same issue.

Our Noumea correspondent, Claudine Wery, reports.

"The Koniambo Nickel in the north of New Caledonia is blocked once again since Monday by local enterpreneurs. They put trucks in front of the site to prevent anyone from working. Nobody has been working on the site since Monday. The local workers are angry because the managers of Koniambo Nickel don't give them enough contracts and favour companies from the southern province."
