Tonga NGOs welcome long term aid commitment by New Zealand

Tonga's civil society forum is welcoming New Zealand's new aid strategy in the country, saying it should help to develop sustainablity.

New Zealand will give Tonga nearly 80 million US dollars in aid over the next ten years, under a new strategy launched yesterday.

The development will focus on governance and civil society, broad-based growth and sustainable livelihoods and education.

The chair of the forum, Drew Havea, says it is a good-sized contribution, and he supports its emphasis on education.

"From a civil society perspective, we are very supportive because this is an area of contribution that goes directly all the way to the grass roots level. Where a Tongan from the outer islands, will have the same access and quality and access to education as those of us in the capital."
