French Polynesia's public sector union strike continues

9:44 am on 15 November 2008

French Polynesia's public sector union strike is in its third day in protest at the French pension reform plans being finalised in Paris.

The French junior minister in charge of overseas territories, Yves Jego, is set to explore the possibility of roundtable discussion in Paris next week to explain the reforms..

The unions want a one-year moratorium of the planned pension cuts.

The Senate in Paris is considering a new ceiling of 18,000 euros a year as the maximum top-up retirees overseas can get in addition to the regular French pension.

France says it no longer wants to pay up to 75 percent more in pension entitlements to those who retire overseas.
