Fiji's interim attorney general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khayium, says he has told a visiting delegation of the European Parliament that elections won't go ahead by March as earlier promised.
Mr Sayed-Khayium has told the website Fijivillage that he has advised the visitors that first there have to be electoral reforms.
This comes after the European delegates said they could see no reason why Fiji couldn't hold elections next year.
While the international community had called for elections by March, the EU appears to have soften its position, saying it now urges that parliamentary elections take place before the end of 2009.
The Fiji budget, however, which was presented last month, makes no provisions for elections.
Fiji's election office says it will take more than a year to organise polls once a decision has been made on what sort of election system will be used.
