PNG police probe Transparency International staff

4:13 pm on 18 December 2008

Police in Papua New Guinea are questioning several employees of Transparency International in Port Moresby after the NGO found irregularities in its internal accounts.

TI works to improve accountability and fight corruption.

The newspaper, The National, claims that some of its PNG staff are accused of working together to defraud TI and a commercial bank.

The Chairman of TI PNG, Peter Aitsi, says they are very disappointed.

He says the organisation accepts its obligation to ensure funds entrusted to it are protected.

Mr Aitsi says individuals who fail to honour the trust placed in them should be reported to the legal systems established to guide us all.
