Port Moresby Governor advocates for new settlements that are not along ethnic lines

The Governor of the National Capital District in Papua New Guinea, Powes Parkop, wants to ensure that residents from Port Moresby's squatter settlements are rehoused in communities that are not structured around ethnic groups.

He is adamant that the Tete settlement, much of which was destroyed under police direction two weeks ago, must be closed permanently.

The Post Courier reports Mr Parkop saying innocent persons had been affected, but the rights and freedom of the majority in the city are paramount.

He says the NCDC is prepared to help with the resettlement and will be seeking further assistance from the national government.

And Mr Parkop says the resettlement will ensure that there is an ethnic balance in the new locations, with no one ethnic group dominating.

He has warned other similar squatter settlements that they need to stop the cycle of revenge killings, otherwise the perpetrators will be identified and removed from the city or those localities.
