Shoppers in the Papua New Guinea capital, Port Moresby, were caught up in a shoot-out drama on Thursday when local police fired at five armed hold-up suspects, killing two of them.

The five men had allegedly held up a local store and were fired on by police as they made off with an undisclosed sum.

Papua New Guinea's National newspaper says there are unconfirmed reports the men had escaped in a car stolen from mourners at a nearby funeral.

The Port Moresby Police Commander Fred Yakasa has confirmed two men died and three were wounded in the shoot-out.

He says the public is fed up with the lawlessness in the city.
