PNG parliament motion for women seats to be reintroduced in May

8:25 pm on 19 March 2009

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare's motion for nominated women seats will be reintroduced in May when Parliament reconvenes.

"PNG's Community Development Minister Dame Carol Kidu told The National that the motion to have three nominated women represented on the floor of Parliament had been shelved for this session."

She said it was necessary as there had been so much confusion and misinformation circulated on the issue since the introduction of the motion and the failed vote last week.

The PNG Government tried could only muster 60 votes in the 109-member house

A two-third majority was required.
