Family of Verebasaga in Fiji unhappy with sentence

8:43 am on 8 April 2009

In Fiji, the family of Nimilote Verebasaga says the three-year sentence for the man convicted of his death is not enough.

Mr Verebasaga's younger brother Ineri Semo expressed disappointment at the High Court's decision to sentence the accused, Maika Vuniwawa, to three years in prison for manslaughter.

Mr Semo told the Fiji Times that were hoping the court would charge Vuniwawa for the murder of Mr Verebasaga but the assessors only found him guilty of manslaughter.

Mr Semo says they thought Vuniwawa would be given a harsher sentence.
