The owner of an Indian restaurant on the island of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands says he's afraid for his life after being shot at during an armed robbery of his premises this week.

Mohammad Naushad Akhatar says two men armed with sticks and a gun broke into Raviz Indian Cuisine in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

It's thought that the robbery is the first in the Cook Islands to involve firing a gun.

Mr Akhatar says it's the third break in at his restaurant but this one was planned, with one man hitting him with a stick and another trying to find the safe.

He says they shot at him but the bullet hit the wall.

"So just I am scared of my life, you know, sometime he's coming for, again maybe he's coming back, so I'm scared"

Mohammad Naushad Akhatar says the police are investigating and he has three men looking after the restaurant.
