Solomon Islands PM sues newspaper for defamation

5:16 pm on 7 May 2009

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua is suing the Island Sun newspaper for allegedly defaming him.

The Solomon Star newspaper reports Dr Sikua and the Secretary to Cabinet, Jeremiah Manele, have filed a joint law suit at the High Court in April against the Island Sun.

The Solomon Star reports the article, published late last year, alleged Dr Sikua and Mr Manele became drunk while attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York and misbehaved at a hotel there.

Both men are denying the allegation and are accusing the Island Sun of defaming their characters.

The Solomon Star reports the High Court has received the case, and says the court is yet to set a date for a hearing.

It quotes the Island Sun editor Priestley Habru as saying its lawyer is preparing its defence.
