Six people have been arrested by Papua New Guinea police after three men were killed when State of Origin rugby league celebrations turned violent last week.

The arrests were made after authorities bulldozed and torched an illegal settlement in Port Moresby where the violence occurred.

State of Origin is a highlight of the year for many people in PNG, with fierce competition between supporters often sparking violence, but this year three people were killed in disputes in three different locations.

Police, working with PNG Power, the water board and the National Capital District Commission demolished the settlement on Friday.

Port Moresby's police commander Chief Superintendent, Fred Yakasa, says demolition and confiscation of beer from blackmarket shops is the only thing illegal settlers understood.

In December last year police took similar action against the Tete settlement after a number of the settlers were arrested for allegedly killing prominent businessman George Constantinou.
