Australia grants Fiji's Chaudhry visa despite regime links

Despite Canberra's travel ban on the Fiji regime, Fiji's former interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has been allowed to visit Australia.

The Australian High Commission in Suva declined to comment why a visa was approved.

Mr Chaudhry is the Labour Party leader and until a year ago, he served as the Finance Minister in the Bainimarama Cabinet.

Mr Chaudhry's son, Rajendra Chaudhry, says his parents have been in Sydney since Sunday.

"He applied for a visa and it was granted so he travelled to Australia on a visa. It was to assist my mother who is receiving medical treatment so he accompanied her as her spouse."

Mr Chaudhry says his parents will stay in Australia for another two weeks.
