Senior public servant in Samoa under scrutiny for alleged misappropriation of public funds

Several public servants in Samoa have questioned the accountability and transparency of the administration of the country's Public Service Commission, the PSC.

This follows the resignation of a senior accounts officer at the Customs department due to an alleged misappropriation of nearly ten thousand US dollars of public money.

A government source says the missing funds were recovered after the former senior accountant paid back the missing funds before leaving the country.

There is no word from the police or other Government agencies on whether there has been an investigation, or if charges have been laid over the theft.

But one Government source says the CEO of the Ministry of Revenue is facing charges, under the PSC regulations, for breach of duty in relation to the missing funds.
