Vanuatu Mobile Force replaces its firearms

11:20 am on 25 November 2009

The Vanuatu paramilitary, the Vanuatu Mobile Force, is decommissioning over 300 SLR fire arms.

Yesterday, a delegation of French military personnel from New Caledonia arrived in Port Vila with 350 FAMAS fire arms to replace the older weapons, which had been donated by Australia more than 25 years ago.

The new guns are lighter and easier to handle.

About 100 members of the VMF are currently in New Caledonia being trained in the use of the new guns.

The decomissioning ceremony started last night and will go throughout today.
