The police in Fiji say they've charged 15 Methodist Church ministers with allegedly holding meetings without a permit.

Under the interim regime's emergency regulations many of the church's meetings have been stopped from going ahead.

Last year the police forced the annual conference - a key Methodist church event - and its national choir festival to be called off.

A police spokesman, Atunaisa Sokomuri, says the latest charges are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged breaches last year.

"Some of the church leaders of the Methodist church, and prominent chiefs were taken to court late last year. And this is a continuation of that investigation."

Atunaisa Sokomuri says the group is expected to appear in court next month.

Eight leading Methodist Church figures including the president, the Reverend Ame Tugaue, the general secretary Reverend Tuikilakila Waqairatu and a former president, Reverend Manasa Lasaro, have made earlier court appearances on the same charges.
