Japan to fund new jetty and market complex in Solomon Islands

The Governments of Solomon Islands and Japan have today signed a multi-million dollar aid agreement for the construction of a new jetty and market in Malaita's provincial capital, Auki.

The agreement, paves the way for work on the 10 and a half million US dollar project to begin at the end of this year.

The Japanese International Cooperation Agency, which will supervise the project, is expected to send conduct a detailed project design by May before announcing a tender process.

The market facility includes a main market hall, shops, butchery, chest freezers and administrative blocks.

The jetty facility includes a main jetty, access jetty and a ferry ramp, as well as shore protection for the market site and a combined small fishing vessel mooring facility.
