The French high commission in New Caledonia has cancelled this year's reception to mark the French National Day on July the 14th.

It has issued a statement, saying because of budget constraints and in keeping with the example set by the Presidency of the republic, the traditional event at the commissioner's residence has been called off.

It also says the customary military parade will still go ahead as planned.
