Tonga is to resume exporting watermelon to New Zealand in the next few weeks.

Matangi Tonga reports that the Prime Minister, Dr Feleti Sevele, made the announcement during a news conference with the New Zealand Foreign Minister, Murray McCully in Nuku'alofa.

Dr Sevele says the fumigation plant at the Queen Salote Wharf will be in full operation soon and the first shipment of Tongan watermelon for New Zealand should then be able to leave the kingdom.

He says the Tongan Growers Federation is involved in the Tongan watermelon export to New Zealand scheme, and it's anticipated that 50 containers of watermelon would be leaving for New Zealand every month.
