People living on Fiji's Lau group have been told to find solutions to the mass migration of islanders to the main island of Viti Levu, amid fears the Lau population could be decimated.
Commissioner Eastern, Lieutenant Colonel Ifereimi Vasu, says migration to Viti Levu can't be stopped but can be minimised.
Lt-Col Vasu warns that funds allocated for development in Lau would depend entirely on population and demand.
He says it would be improper to continue with development projects for the people of Lau if those on the island continue to move to the urban centres.
He told the Fiji Times that figures show the quest for higher education remains the driving force behind much of the migration.
He says the challenge is to convince those in the village to remain there and use the abundant natural resources to lift standards of living.
