Calls for NZ Pacific communities to get more involved in climate change

11:01 am on 25 August 2010

A Climate change campaigner is challenging the Pacific Island community in New Zealand to become more involved in climate change issues.

Fe'iloakitau Kaho Tevi is the general secretary of the Pacific Conference of Churches and a board member of the Global Campaign for Climate Action.

He says he want the Pacific Island community in New Zealand to expect more of the government in terms of addressing climate change.

"The Pacific Island community as a whole should stand up say we are a player in this political scene. If you want our vote, this is what you must be doing for the Pacific region, that's one thing we need to be telling the Pacific island communities, on the otherhand, we should also be telling the Pacific Islands community we should lead by example."

Fe'iloakitau Kaho Tevi says sending back money is not enough of an effort for relatives who are suffering the effects of climate change.
