Call for trial over police shooting in American Samoa to be moved

11:23 am on 1 November 2010

The attorney in American Samoa for a man accused of murdering a police officer is to file for the trial venue to be changed.

Tautai Aviata Faalevao says he doesn't believe Siaumau Siaumau Jr. will get a fair trial in the territory because of the media publicity surrounding the shooting of Lieutenant Liusila Brown in July.

The attorney said he is getting affidavits from the two newspapers as well as radio KHJ News over their coverage of the shooting.

He says it would be hard to find an impartial jury because of the amount of publicity that the incident received in the local media.

Siaumau Siaumau Jr is to appear in High Court tomorrow

( Monday) for a pre trial conference on one charge of murder and the attempted murder of three other officers.
