Fiji invites MCG to Fiji again

6:24 am on 15 February 2011

Fiji's issued another invitation to a group of ministers from the Pacific Islands Forum to visit Fiji.

Fiji's been suspended from the Forum since 2009, over the regime's refusal to return the country to democracy.

The Forum's Ministerial Contact Group which is charged with monitoring Fiji has just met in Vanuatu where Fiji's Interim Foreign Minister issued the invitation.

New Zealand's Foreign Minister Murray McCully says while Fiji's sticking to elections in 2014 the invitation to visit is a good sign.

"We regard that as a constructive and positive sign which we welcome. We will continue to keep in touch and see whether we can identify progress."

The MCG's plans for a visit to Fiji last year to assess the situation first hand were scuttled by Fiji's interim leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, over statements from Australia that the Fiji situation had worsened.
