A Fiji company, which is building a new city near Nausori, says it's aiming to attract tourists and boost revenue.

Canaan Development Enterprise has begun the first of four phases of the Nakorolevu City project, which includes plans for two resorts.

Its Chief Executive, Viliame Yabakivou, says the location of the new city is ideal for tourists.

"Because it is just near the Rewa River, the widest river in Fiji, so water activities for tourists. And it's just opposite the airport. So it's a good place for tourists to come in."

Viliame Yabakivou says he expects the city to generate significant returns for the landowners of Muana village who have offered their land for the project.
