By-elections underway in Samoa for four seats

10:52 am on 30 July 2011

In Samoa, voting is underway in four by-elections.

Fifteen candidates are competing for the vacant parliamentary seats of Aleipata itupa i luga, Anoama'a east, Satupa'itea, and Vaisigano number one constituencies.

The fifteen include three who are running for the opposition Tautua Samoa party, and the rest are supporting the ruling HRPP party.

The ruling party has a confirmed seat at Aleipata itupa i luga because the Tautua Samoa party has no candidate to run against five HRPP candidates from that constituency.

The by-elections were called following a court ruling over election petitions which declared voided the seats for the four constituencies after the elected MPs were found guilty of corrupt practices during March's general election.
