Tonga to receive NZ funding for airport upgrade

5:09 pm on 2 September 2011

The government in Tonga will receive 2.6 million US dollars from New Zealand to upgrade Kaufana Airport in Eua.

A grant agreement was signed between Tonga's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Hon Samiu Vaipulu and the New Zealand High Commissioner in Tonga, Dr Jonathan Austin.

According to Matangi Tonga the project will involve the development of a new runway pavement and new taxi and apron earthworks.

The current terminal is expected to be demolished and reconstructed, and a new airport fence is to be built.

The website quotes Dr Austin as saying the project is part of New Zealand's on-going support for Eua and a demonstration of its commitment to growing Tonga's toursim industry.

The project will begin in October and is expected to be completed early next year.
