Niue premier urges regional focus on economic development

Niue's premier, Toke Talagi says Pacific Island Forum leaders should now focus on sustainable economic development, and not get sidetracked by issues like Fiji.

Following this year's Forum summit, leaders agreed to focus on productive sectors where the Pacific has a comparative advantage - in particular, tourism, fisheries and agriculture.

Mr Talagi says that's exactly what the region should be focussing on.

"Part of my concern sometimes is the fact that we get diverted by side issues like Fiji and so on, when in fact we should be looking at what we can do to help ourselves with our economies, build our economies, using our fisheris, using our tourism and so on. We don't have to be donor dependent."

Toke Talagi says the resources in the Pacific should enable countries to be more economically sustainable.
