The secretary of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, Peter Conway, has fears for the Fiji trade unionist, Felix Anthony, who is again in police detention.

Fiji's Information Ministry Permanent Secretary, Sharon Smith Johns, has confirmed that Felix Anthony was taken into custody on Friday night.

She also confirmed that the Fiji Trade Union Congress President Daniel Urai, who was arrested a week ago, remains in police custody.

Police say their arrests are part of an ongoing investigations.

Peter Conway says he spoken to officials who had been in contact with Mr Anthony.

He says he is distressed to hear about the recent arrest of the pair.

"We are extremely concerned about the Felix being arrested, this comes on top of the president of the Fiji Trade Union Congress being arrested a week ago and he hasn't been released yet, so look, we are extremely concerned."

Daniel Urai was previously arrested in August under Fiji's Public Emergency Regulations for meeting other trade unionists without a permit.

Felix Anthony was also detained by the regime earlier this year.
