Tonga opposition critical of cabinet re-shuffles

6:26 pm on 4 May 2012

The head of Tonga's opposition Democratic Party says there's a leadership crisis in Tonga and what's needed is a leadership with proven integrity and a high level of commitment.

The Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano, reshuffled his government and also announced cuts in the number of senior civil servants earlier this week.

Akilisi Pohiva says this is the third time the Prime Minister has re-shuffled his cabinet.

He says he believes this reveals a lack of leadership.

"This is a sign of incompetence. He doesn't seem to have the confidence of his ministers and vice versa. His ministers, they do not seem to have confidence in the leadership of the Prime Minister."

However Mr Pohiva says cutting the number of the governments senior civil servants is a good move to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
