Tahiti protest over fuel price hike fizzles

12:51 pm on 18 July 2012

A planned protest against fuel price hikes in French Polynesia has been largely abandoned.

Reports from Tahiti say only a small number of fishing boats were at the Papeete port entrance and ferry traffic was not disturbed.

The reports also say only a few dozen people gathered at the assembly in a protest called by the group Te Tau no te Hono which represents a cross section of professionals.

The employers' federation has issued a statement, saying it understands the group's concerns but sees no solution in blocking more of the economy.

It says the remedy should not be killing the patient.
