Vanuatu Labour Council seeks views on minimum wage

3:05 pm on 18 July 2012

Vanuatu's Tripartite Labour Advisory Council is seeking employers' views on a Department of Labour proposal to increase the minimum wage by 15 percent.

The increase would take the minimum monthly wage to 319 US dollars.

The Council says employers have until Monday to send in their comments.

Earlier the Council advised against a proposal by the Minister of Labour George Wells for the minimum wage to be increased to 341 dollars a month.

Workers in Port Vila say the current minimum wage of 277 US dollars is insufficient for covering rents, energy costs and school fees.
