The President of the College of the Marshall Islands says he hopes students taking part in the country's first online nursing degree will lesson the health ministry's dependence on foreign nurses.

The 14 students, who hold associate nursing degrees, received scholarships for the two-year online bachelor of science, through the University of Maine at Fort Kent in the United States.

The President of the College of the Marshall Islands, Carl Hacker says the course will advance their science knowledge and hopes it will benefit the country's public health system.

"Almost all of our nurses, registered nurses, almost all come from overseas or off-island. We have very, very few Marshallese that have four year nursing degrees. So we're hoping that of course 14 more would be a big help for the ministry of health."

Carl Hacker says he hopes more nurses from the Marshall Islands can eventually take part in the online degree.
