Bid to impeach CNMI Governor tipped to fail

Northern Marianas lawmakers say efforts to impeach the governor, Benigno Fitial, will fail because the leadership in the 20-member House is aligned with the governor.

But pro-impeachment lawmakers say introducing a resolution would make a bold statement against the governor who they say should be held accountable for his decisions.

They are concerned at the way Governor Fitial protected the former attorney general, Edward Buckingham.

Mr Buckingham, who is facing criminal charges, resigned on Monday.
