A Japanese government grant and fisheries revenue is helping the Marshall Islands to buy fuel for its two power plants.
The Japan Embassy in Majuro announced that Ebeye Island's power utility is to benefit from nearly one million US dollars in aid set aside for emergency support to the energy sector.
The Marshalls Energy Company is using the grant funding to purchase fuel that will be used to generate electricity for Ebeye Island, the second largest urban centre in the country.
The company, which operates power plants in Majuro and Ebeye, has been struggling to pay its fuel bills because the government-owned Marshall Islands Resort owes it nearly two million dollars in power bills and other government agencies have also not paid their power bills.
