Plea for ailing former Fiji leader to be moved from jail to infirmary

Former Fiji prime minister Laisenia Qarase, who is currently serving a one year jail term, is expected to appeal against his conviction in relation to the Fijian Holdings Limited case tomorrow.

Qarase was sentenced in July on six counts of abuse of office, and three counts of discharging his duty with respect to property in which he had a private interest.

Meanwhile Fiji Village reports that Qarase's lawyer, Tupou Draunidalo, has requested that the 71 year old be transferred to an infirmary due to his age and state of health.

According to medical records presented earlier in court, Qarase is a diabetic and hypertensive.

Tupou Draunidalo says she is yet to receive a reply.
