CEO of Fiji fire service praises actions of Naviti Resort staff

The CEO of Fiji's National Fire Authority says staff at a popular resort on the Coral Coast responded well when a fire broke out yesterday, ensuring all guests were evacuated quickly.

John Masi O'Connor says when the fire service arrived at Naviti Resort the main foyer was fully engulfed but they were able to avoid it spreading into the accommodation blocks.

The resort was near full capacity with 239 guests, most of whom are now at the neighbouring Warwick Resort.

Mr O'Connor says none of the guests were injured and says it was thanks to the actions of staff, who receive training from the Authority.

"In Naviti we have conducted fire wardens training and the outcome of that training was evident, even though the fire spread very quickly, the staff and management of Naviti really did a good job in evacuating their guests and likewise the staff to safe areas."

John Masi O'Connor says a team is back at the site today conducting investigations into the cause of the fire.
