Sport: Fiji, NZ, Aus start strong at Pacific champs

11:22 am on 27 November 2012

Fiji have made a bright start to the Pacific Youth Basketball Championships in Australia, joining New Zealand and the host nation in picking up wins in both the men's and women's competition.

The Fiji men, who came a lowly seventh two years ago, edged New Caledonia 79-74 in the match of the day, with the women proving too strong for Guam.

Samoa's men and the New Caledonian women were the other winners on day one.

But the perfect records won't last long with all four winners in the women's draw to face off on Tuesday afternoon, and the Samoa and Australia men's teams to put their strong starts to the test.
