The Papua New Guinea Government is this week expected to put legislation before parliament calling for an extension of the grace period for a motion of no-confidence from 18 to 30 months.
The amendment is likely to be the first parliamentary business after the passage of the 2013 Budget.
An academic at the National Research Institute, Dr Henry Okole, says there appears to be significant consensus about the need to extend the grace period.
He says this reflects concern about the instability that occurs within the country when votes of no confidence happen.
"Going back some fifteen, twenty years, at least into the eighties, and at the same time it places a lot of difficulties on the government particularly with regard to implementation issues of policies and projects and so forth. So there is that historical perspective that needs to be taken into account when talking about looking at the extension of the grace period."
