Vanuatu police have appealed for calm after an elderly man from Tongoa Island was run over and killed in Port Vila.

The bus was driven by a man from Tanna Island and the accident came amid a clash between youths from both islands.

The groups were throwing stones at each other.

The bus had been used to transport the Tanna youths to the Tongoa community at Agathis.

Police are relying on the custom chiefs of Tongoa and Tanna to sort out the tension, while the group from Tanna is expected to pay compensation for the man's death.

Our correspondent reports the Tanna group has allegedly threatened to burn buildings in Port Vila if there are any arrests over the violence.
