Call for Solomons prime minister to resign over allegations

5:49 pm on 9 January 2013

The Solomon Islands prime minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo, is being urged to resign over allegations of sexual misconduct.

The call, from a group representing the interests of Malaitans, follows the publication by a facebook group and the Solomon Star newspaper of allegations that Mr Lilo paid compensation over an affair with a Malaitan woman.

Mr Lilo is taking legal action against both parties while the facebook group, Forum Solomon Islands International, has lodged a case against him with the Leadership Code Commission.

Malaita Ma'asina Forum's general secretary, Charles Ashley, says the prime minster should step aside while the legal action takes place.

"The way we read the constitutional provision section 94 basically calls into question his role, him being there as the prime minister. I think it is in his interests and that of his family as well as this nation that he should step aside."

Charles Ashley says the Fforum wants the Leadership Code Commission to consider the case promptly to ensure the situation does not get out of hand.
