The judicial authorities in French Polynesia have released a suspect in a major corruption probe, Cyril Legayic, after holding him for nearly three months.

Mr Legayic, who is the secretary general of the confederation of independent unions, is alleged to have been given 160,000 US dollars in cash over four years to contain strikes.

The money was obtained from a New Caledonian businessman, Bill Ravel, who has significant interests in Tahiti.

He was also jailed for two months as part of the investigation, along with one of his associates, Gaston Tetuanui, who is alleged to have diverted some of the money meant to be paid to the unionist.
