French Pacific plans better tsunami alert systems

2:37 pm on 14 March 2013

Disaster risk managers of the French Pacific territories say they are hoping to improve public alert systems of potential tsunami threat.

Scientists from the Navy, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community and local officials held a meeting in New Caledonia this week to discuss how they can be better prepared for the risks posed by tsunamis.

The SPC says participants exchanged and shared scientific knowledge on tsunami risks, including lessons learnt from the spread of the tsunami from the Japanese earthquake in March 2011.

A wide range of responses are being planned to boost community protection, including educational material, alarms and signs.
