Extra Niue flight prompts new businesses

The chair of the Niue Tourism Board, Teresa Scott, says an additional flight to Niue, starting next month, has prompted some new businesses to set up.

Air New Zealand, which currently flies to the island once a week with a flight underwritten by the Niue Government, is to make an extra trip each fortnight during the high season of April to October.

Ms Scott says they know that in the past many prospective visitors have been turned away by the lack of airline seats.

She says Niue now has more than enough accommodation, car rental firms have got more stock and some new businesses are starting.

"There's been a few additional tour operators at this point. There's been a couple of fishing charters and spear fishing. Also Niue Dive have added another boat. So people are gearing up for it. The small operators - certainly there have been a few more come into the market and ones that are already established are trying to expand to prepare for it."
